Geographical Indication Registration
A geographical indication is a sign identifying products whose specific quality, reputation or other characteristics are essentially attributable to a particular locality, region or country of origin. It comprises two types, appellation of origin and indication of source, and legally secures the link between the product and the specified geographical area.
Unlike an individual trademark, geographical indication registration protects the collective value of a product belonging to a locality. Registration is carried out through a technical file defining the product's method of production, distinctive characteristics and link to the geographical area. Preparing the application correctly is critical to ensuring clarity in the scope of registration and the inspection conditions. We follow the process from start to finish with our expert team.
An appellation of origin covers cases where all production stages of the product take place in a specific geographical area. An indication of source, on the other hand, means that at least one of the production stages occurs in that locality. Geographical indication registration gives producers the means to protect the product's name against unauthorised use and to secure the commercial reputation of the regional product.
Protecting regional products in international markets provides a significant export advantage. Many countries, notably the European Union, grant special protection to appellations of origin and indications of source. At Yedi Kıta Patent, with our representatives worldwide, we facilitate your international geographical indication protection processes.
